About
MEET SUSAN
I love words. When a sentence that I write sparkles, it spikes my adrenalin. But more than just the beauty of words strung together to make bedazzling sentences, I love the power of words in peopleās lives. I hope to share words that encourage you without being super cutesy. Words that make your heart sing on a day that it feels like hiding under the covers. Words that bring an awkwardly loud snort while youāre at that coffee shop with uber-cool people who donāt ever snort, awkwardly or otherwise.
So now that weāve established I adore words, letās dive into some perfectly ignorable and inane things about me.
First things first: I donāt understand tea. Iāve tried to. I gave it an honest-to-goodness shot. But maybe tea rejected me. Coffee and I, however, have a perfectly compatible relationship.
I love me some Bible time. I canāt do without my daily dose of Scripture. Itās my little getaway time with Jesus that nourishes me in a way that a diet of Kale, protein supplements, and nut butter canāt. His Word is sweeter than honey and He is indeed the Bread of Life.
I own (well, technically, theyāre on lease from God) two tweens teens. I donāt think Iāll ever tire of squishing them, although they donāt particularly appreciate said squishes from their certifiably over-affectionate mama. My handsome husband of 16 18Ā years also has something to do with the hatchlings I speak of.
Iām blown away by how God has taken the writing of this 40-something mama living in India and shared it with people across the globe.
My YouVersion Bible Plans have collectively had more than 400K 750K unique user completions so far. What??? How can that not be a God thing?
My writing has appeared on Desiring God ā I took a screenshot of John Piperās article next to mine because who woulda thunk ā and Randy Alcornās blog and Relevant Magazine, Huffington Post, and a bunch of other places. Amazed by our amazing God.
I hold a masterās degree in journalism from Syracuse University, New York. Other publications Iāve written for includeĀ The Gospel Coalition, Risen Motherhood, Indiaanya, FaithIt, Her View from Home, The MOPS Blog, For Every Mom, Motherly, Engage Magazine, and Parent.com among others.
Thanks for sticking around and reading this.

Thanks for the great YouVersion devotionals! I have used them all in my devotions and am starting on my second round with the Advent devotion.
We, my wife and I plan to use at least one of the Advent devotions as a reading at our Senior Adult Christmas event. They are all so good that we are having a hard time choosing which one to use.
Blessings on you! Thank You for all that you are doing for the Kingdom of God!
Susan Narjala
Aw! I’m so blessed that you would use one of the devotionals for the Seniors’ event. Thank you so much for sharing that, Ted. I’m so very grateful for the gift of writing and I hope and pray I steward it well. Blessings, Susan

Loved connecting with you in fellowship and prayer yesterday and loved reading your introduction! Praying God continues to use you in amazing ways .
The scripture that has got my mind engaged these days in a crazed world is Revelation 3:18 .. I counsel you to buy from ME gold refined in the fire, that you may be rich;

Really nice meeting you too, Susan. Thank you for reading my blog! (I’m now happy that I got my “business” card printed :)) I love that Scripture. Will have to really chew on it because there is so treasure to unearth there. Many blessings and I hope we can stay in touch! Susan

Hi Susan! Do you remember me from church in Hillsboro? We didnāt get closely acquainted then but I feel that Iām getting to know you now. I downloaded your āDo Not be Anxiousā plan on the Bible app a while ago and am reading it now. I had forgotten that you wrote it so when I sit down it feels like an unexpected coffee date with you. Thank you. I really needed the reminders and encouragement from the 1st dayās scripture. He perceives my thoughts from afar. Give ear to my word O Lord. Iām thankful that while weāre a hemisphere apart, we can still be family.
Susan Narjala
Hi Crystal! So great to hear from you. I do remember you. It’s funny (and probably God-ordained) that we “meet” again after all these years. Thank you so much for taking the time to write and encourage me. I hope and pray that the Bible plan continues to be a blessing to you! With love, Susan

Hi, Susan,
I was just reading some of the information you have posted about yourself and your ministry and decided to subscribe. Iāve been walking with the Lord for over 60 years of my life. He has always been my āAll in all.ā Right now, Iām going through a difficult stretch in my lifeās journey and recognize my need for help and encouragement from the Body of Christ. I saw your invitation to try your devotional on overcoming discontentment and I thought I would like to give it a try. Iāll let you know how the Lord uses it in my life once Iām done. Thank you for using the gifts that the Lord has given you to edify and encourage His people.
Blesssings,

I love and enjoy this Bible study! I pray that the Lord will put it in my heart to always put Him first in everything that I do daily. I long to talk to Him deeper in my Bible studies but sometimes I feel so far from Him. God bless you for to have the heart to share your daily encounter with the Lord! Awesome!

God bless you in your walk with Him, Perlita. May we all stay the course with our eyes fixed on Jesus. He who started a good work in us will be faithful to bring it to completion. Blessings, Susan

looking on you version for an advent plan this morning.
wading through the mega churches and good christian guys who don’t speak in tongues. I usually look up who I am allowing to speak into my journey with Father God, since me and religion got divorced in 2009. If you have ever listened to Godfrey Birtill’s song, “Just One Touch From the King”, then you know my anthem. Found your advent devo, came here and perfect. I am at an age where it is even more important for me to speak into other women’s lives and ditto them to me. Bless your journey and your loves, may the peace of Christ dwell richly in you. Elizabeth
Susan Narjala
Hi Elizabeth. Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to connect! I’m humbled that you may be using my devo to spend more time with the Lord this season. I will look up the song that you mentioned š Many blessings, Susan
Carol
I also found this site redirected from a You Version App Bible Reading Plan that I stumbled upon whilst scrolling down to go to the Bible. I know & am touched by Godfrey Birtillās song, āJust One Touch From the Kingā. I say Amen to uour comment & has been a blessing reading some of the blogs and comments. God’s blessings in Jesus’ Name, to you Susan, Elizabeth & all the readers that read the plans & blogs that God has breathed on you to write.
Susan Narjala
Thank you, Carol. That’s my prayer tooāthat many will be blessed by these words that God lays on my heart. Thank you for the encouragement. Blessings, Susan
Lorraine Moodley
Hi are you implying that people who speak in tongues are bad . Pls study the book of Corinthians on praying in tongues . Unfortunately it was the church fathers who said it was only for the apostles ā¦ Paul spoke in tongues and said that he spoke in tongues more than anyone else ā¦ and look how much he accomplished. He wrote half of New Testament

Hi Susan! I just finished your 40 day devotional – Journeying with Jesus. I read a lot of devotionals, but none have ever left me wanting to get in contact with the author to let them know just how much I was changed, challenged, and blessed by their words. I really appreciate you for undoubtedly pouring your heart into that devotional. I look forward to reading more of your words soon!

Susan,
So blessed to have read your 40-day devotional! In fact I moved on to another devotional and it was like I was reading a foreign language! And I realized it’s just how beautiful and perfectly written the words are that God has given you! I had to look you up and I don’t think I’ve ever done that before! Your devotionals were applicable to everyday Life and what I believe to be a gift from God. I would hope you would consider writing devotionals on a daily in your website. You are adorable and relatable. Keep doing what you’re doing being obedient to our Lord and savior and transcribing those thoughts that he gives you on to that paper! God bless you and your family.
Susan Narjala
Thank you so much, Carletta! I pray that the Lord continues to give me words to share and I’m obedient to that calling. I like the idea of doing daily devotionals on my website. Let me try and build a bit of an archive with that and, maybe, start posting those in a few months. Thanks for your words of encouragement. So subscribe to my blog so you can get my articles in your inbox every week. Many blessings, Susan

Mel Hernandez
Hi Susan. I found your devotional on YouVersion and start it today for Lent. I always do a small “background check” on most of the longer devotional readings I do. And your first few sentences caught my attention. You love words, you love stringing them together to help people and you appreciate the power of words. I also love words and have always had a fascination with the need to have the precise word to say and learn to spell all words. (I love spelling also). My goal when I first went into the medical profession doing office work was to learn to spell many of the difficult medical terms. I always thought it was odd that I loved words, and doubted that there were many other people like me with this bizarre intrigue and passion for words – I look forward to reading your devotionals and hearing your words of encouragement. Thank you!
Susan Narjala
Hi Mel! Good to meet a fellow word-o-phile š (I’m sure there’s a more technical term for that!). Thank you for reading the devotional. I hope it encourages you in your walk with God. – Susan

I like the way you said you keeping it real done with fake and filtered. That was awesome. I just began your devotional on Behind the scenes The Esther Story. I am on day 4. I love the story of Esther it has so many layers. I especially love how The Lord orchestrated that He would not be mentioned in the entire book but be all over it. One thing that is always mentioned is that Esther fasted which she did and prayed. Unfortunately it Never says Esther prayed in the bible. That is real. I believe there is a good reason for that just as there is a good reason God is not mention. Hope this helps in your next devotional of Esther.
Susan Narjala
Thanks for getting in touch, Jeanette. Appreciate your feedback on the devotional. I guess the assumption that Esther prayed while she fasted is pretty strong in the passage because, according to my research, fasts didn’t simply take place for health reasons (like today’s intermittent fasting programs, for instance), but for religious reasons. Therefore, it’s assumed that Esther prayed while she fasted. But you’re right to point out things that may not be entirely Biblical that are often presented as truth in modern Christian writing. Thanks for that. Susan

Hi Susan, I am reading your devotional on You version and wanted to say that it is clear in your writing that you are someone who is intimately acquainted with Jesus and it has been a real blessing. And I just read your blog about your parents in reference to 1 Corinthians 13 and it reminded me of when I was journaling that God is … patient, God is … kind, He is not easily angered, He keeps no record of wrongs. Thank you š

Hi Cindy! Thank you so much for writing in. Yes, He is a God who is patient and kind and all those things mentioned in 1 Corinthians 13. I needed that reminder now! Have a blessed week. Susan

Leon Hampton
Hi Susan,
My wife & I are so enjoying the devotional.
Let me share what we learned today.
Yesterday, Saturday, we read the Day 11 devotional, which was about Judas. So sobering.
In that devotional you write about the encounter of Jesus and Judas in the garden. You write, āwhat really blows my mind is Jesusā statement to Judas as he came accompanied by a mob of angry, misguided men. Jesus simply says, āDo what you came for, friend.ā
He calls Judas āfriend.ā I donāt believe that Jesus was using that term lightly. Thatās a God of love.ā
We found that section of scripture fascinating and talked much about it, trying to understand Godās love & how he calls us to respond to, shall I say, āadversariesā. Frankly, it is hard to understand.
Oddly enough, our pastor spoke about Judas today, too. Go figure.
Finally, my wife suggested I look up the Greek word. We were surprised by what we learned.
The Greek word for āfriendā in Matt 26:50 is āhetaĆrosā. It is not a synonym with phĆlos, which means a true friend who seeks the other’s good.
I wonāt bore you with all the word study, but here is the conclusion of what the commentator from the AMG Complete Word Study Dictionary wrote.
āHetaĆros is one who only projects his own interest. The inference, therefore, is that hetaĆros means a selfish acquaintance, one who seeks his own interests above the interests of others. He is a partner in a company, not necessarily for the good of others but primarily for his own advantage. The good of others is acceptable only when it promotes his own well-being.ā
āThe verb hetairĆ©Å (n.f.) basically means to keep company with or to establish and maintain a meretricious, pretentious, ostentatious, deceptive, and misleading friendship.ā
WOW! Jesus nails Judas as one who was in it for his own gain.
Our pastor concluded his message by saying we donāt know much about Judas and that Judasā final resolution is a question that wonāt be answered until Jesus returns.
That may be so, but Jesusā reference to Judas as hetaĆros-a āfriendā, a companion in for it for his own gain-reveals a lot about Judas.
Thought youād find this interesting.
Respectfully,
Leon
Susan Narjala
Wow, Leon. Thank you for this insight! That is so good to know. (Sometimes, I wish the translators had been more accurate :)). Also, this is a good reminder for me to check out the meanings in Greek/ Hebrew in commentaries. I wonder, though, if the meaning we get out of this without access to commentaries should be shelved… I know that when I write about things in a public forum, research is important, but what do you think one should do when the application is personal? Just curious to get your thoughts on this. Thanks again for this deeper insight into the passage and the word. Blessings, Susan
Aaron Matthew
Susan, thank you for your work to promote the Kingdom of God! I am finding you for the first time because of Leon’s comment because I am researching “hetaĆros” as I too am a lover of words, in many languages!
What Leon has written is consistent with the information that I’ve found thus far, which is exciting as this Greek word only appears three times in the Bible, all in Matthew: 20:13 (The Parable of the Workers in the Vineyard), 22:12 (The Parable of the Wedding Banquet), and 26:50 (Jesus arrested after Judas betrays Him).
So, when Jesus uses this with Judas it is the sole usage outside of a parable in all of Scripture! Ouch!
May The LORD bless you and every other wonderful weirdo out there (and maybe a couple of non-weirdos, I guess)!

That is exactly my experience, too! I just finished Day 5 of Motherhood: The Freedom of Not Being Enough. And I said I need to know who created this plan that has been such a blessing.
Thank you so much for sharing liberating truth. We here so many things that pit us under pressure. Just this morning, it was like I felt God asking me: “Why are you feeling overwhelmed? Am I the one that asked you to attempt to save the world?” Then I open the plan and see “The Do-It-All Disease”.
Thank you so much. God bless you!

Hi Susan! You sure do have a way with words that is very insightful and captivating. My first encounter with you was after I finished your well crafted lenten devotion “Journeying with Jesus” 2years ago. It was the first time in my life I was curious enough to search for an author and that’s how I found you. I was thrilled to find that you are a lady, wife, mother, a writer, an Indian, the list goes on…I can’t even begin to describe how I’ve been blessed by that devotion- such that I have it on repeat on my phone as my daily reminder of what is important. I needed that reminder to keep me check and I don’t have a meaningful lenten season without Journeying with Jesus devotion.
I have been following you ever since and I get excited whenever I get any notifications from Alliteration Alley. Because I know you will always come up with something interesting.
You are blessing lives Susan…Keep it up!
Warmest regards,

Letter to My 20-Year-Old Selfā on desiring God website. I loved your candor but most off I want to thank you for your surgical precision- it is the truth I needed to hear. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. My journey for healing and rebuilding my worth on the truths of Godās word can begin now! šā¤ļø

That blesses my heart. Thank you for sharing that, Hope.

I came across your article today on Facebook because my previous pastor shared it. I was hooked immediately for two reasons: firstly, the content resonated with me instantly since I am one of those “list” people (super efficient in my my eyes), to great annoyance, at times, of my husband and grown children and, secondly, because of your wit and way with words. You see, I too love words! I’m an editor at the education department in South Africa. Bless you and thank you for allowing God to use you and your gift of words.
Susan Narjala
Hi Elvera! I’m a list person, too. But slowly trying to let go of those lists and find my enoughness in Christ. And thrilled to connect with someone who loves words too š

I really enjoy reading your writings! I have followed you for a couple of years. When it came time to choose a Lenten devotional I picked the same one the last two years – and it was yours!!! I love your authenticity and your ability to draw me closer to God. Thank you so much for what you are doing and keep it up!!!
Susan Narjala
Wow! Thanks, Donna. I’m honored that you would choose my devotional two years in a row. I feel sooo blessed to share what God’s putting in my heart with you. Take care, Susan

Hi Susanna, I just completed your 40 day Lenten study through Uversion. I truly enjoyed it so much. Thank you for your wonderful insights.
I have one small suggestion. On day 35 I found out the study was written by a woman. I didnāt know that and it does not matter. But at the end of the study, your comment is for women only. I wondered if you could change the wording a little so men are included. Other than that – I totally loved this Reflection during lent. God has given you some wonderful insights. Happy Easter! Please feel free to contact me if you donāt understand the part I am referring to.
Susan Narjala
Thanks, Renee! I appreciate your stopping by. Thanks also for your suggestion. I didn’t mean to exclude men from the particular devotional, but instead meant to highlight the role the women played. I’ll look into the wording, for sure. Blessings, Susan

Hi Susan just tracked you down to let you know how much I appreciate the series Journeying with Jesus the 40 days of Lent daily study you provided for the you version Bible app. God is using it mightily. Keep being an intentional conduit for God centered writings and He will continue to open doors.

Thanks so much for the encouragement, Phil! Really appreciate your stopping by my blog to share your thoughts!

Iām currently working through your reading plan on You Version: āJourneying with Jesus- 40 Days Lent Devotional.ā I love it. First I read the Bible passage & reflect & take notes- then I read your devotional & often find that you focus on the same details in the scripture that caught my attention as well. Your writing is wonderful- & I love the layout (ie. āBringing it Homeā & āLean inā) This is one of my favorite reading plans on You Version so far. Thank you!

Thanks so much, Fawn! It’s wonderful how the Lord speaks! I really appreciate your writing in to let me know!

My Father and Mother both suffered painfully during their fight against lung cancer and. Yes my Father used some marijuana during his last battles against his fight against the terrible illness! My mother didnāt use the medical use of marijuana. They put some in my Dadās diet. Some kind of brownies. Not very much though. My family wanted him to suffer less so they were ready to ease his anxiety, pain, and suffering š. I suffer from a By Polar condition and also just found out that I am also have dementia so I do take medication. I believe God knows what we as His children can manage and be affective until the illness has reached its final stages. I will listen to my family and my Doctors š„¼ and allow them to make judgements when needed. Yes I am praying š that I will have the time to see my Granddaughters,Grandsons, Greatdaughter, my 2 sons and 1 Daughter with all my heart š and Soul in all the time I will have in good health to participate in!! God is in Control!! I trust Him so I am going to get and do whatever I can to fulfill my days left here.

I am so glad I found your devotion on youversion app. This is what drew me to find you. I know I commented before about the journaling but I have to tell you what perfect timing this has been. I am now sitting 6 hours away from my home in a hospital room with my sister. She has had 2 over the last few weeks and one a few years ago. The last stoke doing the worst. She might not come back from it. I am brought back to many years of journaling and notes in my bible including a date of when she came forward with the lord and then again 8 years later to come back. The last two have probabaly been the worst without god, but I trust only God knows the heart. I write this to ask for prayer for healing of her heart in the lord and her physical heart as well. And her children to come to know God and be reconciled to God as all three at one time came to God as well and reconciled to each other. Thank you for your prayers. I thought I would share as I began journaling as I plan to throughout the night as I sit with her and pray. Thanks!

I read the article you posted about the use of marijuana. I don’t agree with recreational drugs, but what about the use of marijuana as a medicine. It does have proven medical value. How do you feel the Christian should view this?

I loved your blog. True words for women of any age. I enjoy writing a blog too. Mine focuses on the garden but I toss in a little bit of myself each time as well.
