Keeping it Real

A Prayer in the Midst of Powerlessness

I’ve been grappling about what to share during this time when the world as we know it seems to be collapsing.

If there’s one thing that this virus has revealed to us it’s our absolute powerlessness. Yes, we wash our hands for 20 seconds and disinfect every surface and sanitize our surroundings. But, ultimately, the power to end this, the power of healing, the power of life and death lies with a Sovereign God whose ways are far beyond our understanding.

So we ask:

In the face of pestilence and pandemics, God, may our instinctual response be prayer and not panic.

We don’t just pray for protection which only You can envelop us in.

We don’t just pray for provision which comes from Your generous and bountiful hand.

We pray for power over our innate selfishness and self-preservation. May we have eyes to see the hurting and the helpless. May we learn to serve and not hoard.

We pray for patience as we are closed into smaller spaces with the same old faces. May we see the good and ignore the not-so-good and love each other warts and all.

We pray for purposeful lives in the midst of the absence of activity. May we not allow this time to become one of lethargy or listlessness but God-glorifying daily living.

We pray that we will pursue You especially as much else has been stripped away. May this unprecedented quiet draw us into Your presence.

We pray for a posture of humility where down on our knees we discover the most high place. May we repent of our self-will and our desire to play god.

We pray for a peace that guards our hearts and our minds in Christ Jesus. May we be overwhelmed by Your love and not our circumstances.

We pray for a perspective that is eternal and not temporal. May we not surrender to fear as those without hope.

We pray for Your perfect presence in the midst of pain.

We pray for Your unquenchable power in the midst of our powerlessness.

We look forward to a time when we can come together as families and friends and communities and churches and schools to simply celebrate the joy of life.

Amen
