Off Season

The holiday season is around the corner. Soon there’ll be an equal number of too-good-to-pass-up shopping deals in my inbox as there will be ‘how to simplify your life’ blogs. Malls become mini war zones with the sirens of rude honks and the frenzy of rushing feet. Shoppers with eyes glazed over, zombies, way past Halloween. People are so busy buying gifts and making pinteresting homespun gifts that they don’t actually have time to meet up with anyone we’re making/ buying the gift for.

But where would we be without the holiday frenzy? Life would just be a blur of school lunches and soccer games. We actually depend on our holidays to punctuate our lives and give it some purpose beyond homework and ham sandwiches.

So, let’s just say, Thank you for the distractions of the Holidays. If I didn’t make 28 Valentine cards for my kids to take to preschool life would be just plain humdrum. I actually need the pastel cupcake liners for Easter so my life itself is less predictable. Who needs plain silver liners all year around? I welcome pumpkin patches and sloshy feet.

Growing up in India, we didn’t get to have these little punctuation mark holidays. Sure there was Christmas where we pulled out one tiny box of decorations carefully stored for decades. But I figure we didn’t need so much distraction, considering life itself was a whirlwind of distraction, where nothing ever got done.
