Keeping it Real

Hey Mama

Hey Mama,

Bent over the kitchen counter,

Distractedly eating leftovers.

Yes you,

With the ragged PJs

The greasy hair and yesterday’s eyeliner.

Here’s something you should know:

God sees you.

He sees you,

Even when no one else does;

He sees you,

When you feel overlooked.

Hey mama,

Dark circles under your eyes,

Sleepwalking and suppressing yawns.

Yes you,

Up all last night

Checking if she was still coughing,

Or if he was too hot, or maybe too cold?

Here’s something you should know:

God walks with you.

He walks with you,

Even when no one else does;

He walks with you,

When you can’t go on.

Hey mama,

Scribbling away in her journal,

Wondering if she has messed up.

Yes you,

Carrying a burden of guilt—

“Was I too hard on them?

Should I have done more?”

Here’s something you should know:

God covers you.

He covers you,

Even when no one else does;

He covers you,

When you doubt yourself.

Hey mama,

Waking up before her alarm,

Planning menus and packing lunches.

Yes you,

Figuring out after-school schedules

Wondering how to fit it all in

Before dinner and bedtime,

Here’s something you should know:

God’s got you.

He’s got you,

Even when no one else does;

He’s got you,

When you are overwhelmed

Hey mama,

Sleeping in just a bit

On Mother’s Day morning

Yes you,

Wondering if there’ll be coffee in bed

And if you’ll have to clean up the spills.

Here’s something you should know:

God pours into you.

He pours into you,

Even when no one else does;

He pours into you,

When you have nothing left to give.

Hey mama,

Yes you,

The one who feels

Overlooked

Exhausted

Unsure

Overwhelmed

Empty

Here’s something you should know:

He loves you

And He is always enough.
